2018 Secretary General Report SAMOA Pathway

Follow-up to and implementation of the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway and the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States

Summary

The present report provides an update on the follow up to and implementation of the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway and the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). It gives an account of progress made and challenges confronted by SIDS in their implementation efforts. The present report also exhibits the extent of support rendered to SIDS by the organizations of the United Nations system, agencies and other international bilateral and multilateral development partner. Despite the myriad of challenges, SIDS continue to make progress. The international community are requested to continue to deliver effective support and assistance to these vulnerable countries.

Key stakeholders consulted

In preparing this report, contributions were received from 8-member States, namely: Austria, Bahrain, Cuba, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Russia, Marshall Islands and Russia Federation. 16 UN entities also provided inputs, 2 of which were non-UN entities These organizations included: the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR); the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP); the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) including Belize Country Team; the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNDP office of Timor-Leste; UN Country Team(UNCT) of Guinea-Bissau; the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO);the International Telecommunication Union (ITU); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the International Trade Centre (ITC); the International Monetary Fund (IMF); the International Organization for Migration (IOM); United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing State (UN-OHRLLS), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); and Partnerships in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (Paris21);
